Trademark registration in India for your brand name, logo or tagline.
ZegalWorks handles your trademark from search to certificate, including replies to examination reports and monitoring of opposition, for brands in Chennai, across Tamil Nadu and the rest of India.
What is Trademark Registration?
A registered trademark gives you exclusive rights to use your brand name, logo or tagline for specific goods and services across India, and the right to take legal action against copycats. It is registered with the Trade Marks Registry under the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and lasts 10 years, renewable.
The process has several stages: search, application, examination, publication in the Trade Marks Journal, an opposition window and registration. You may use the TM symbol once you have filed, and the registered symbol only after registration.
Registration is national, not state-wise, and it is separate from registering a company or business name. A company name approved by the MCA does not give you trademark rights. Before filing, run a trademark search, and keep an eye on the 10-year expiry through trademark renewal.

What you need
We confirm the exact list for your situation during your free consultation.
- Applicant
- Individual, proprietor, partnership, company or LLP, with reduced government fees for individuals, startups and small enterprises. A startup normally needs DPIIT recognition (see Startup India registration) and a small enterprise an Udyam registration.
- Mark
- A clear image of the logo, or the name or tagline in text.
- Classes
- One or more of the 45 classes, chosen by what you sell or offer. Not sure which? Try the free Trademark Class Finder.
- Documents
- ID and address of the applicant, power of authority, and proof of use if the mark is already in use.
- Use of the mark
- You can file for a mark you already use or one you propose to use. Proof of use helps if the mark has been in use for some time.
Stages of trademark registration in India
These are the government stages your application passes through. We handle each one for you.
- Search. Check the public register for identical or similar marks in your class before you file.
- Choose classes. Pick the class or classes that match your goods or services. The free Trademark Class Finder gives a starting point.
- File. The application (Form TM-A) is e-filed with the Trade Marks Registry. Your application number and filing date are recorded from this point.
- Examination. The Registry examines the application and may raise objections. You reply in writing within the time stated in the report, and a hearing may follow.
- Publication. An accepted mark is advertised in the Trade Marks Journal.
- Opposition window. Anyone can oppose within four months of publication. If there is no opposition, or it is decided in your favour, the mark proceeds.
- Registration. You receive the registration certificate. Protection runs for 10 years from the date of application and can be renewed.
Trademark registration for brands in Chennai and Tamil Nadu
Applications are filed online, so you do not need to visit the Registry. An application is generally handled by the Trade Marks Registry office whose territory covers the applicant’s principal place of business in India. IP India lists the Chennai office as covering Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
A trademark protects your brand across India, not only in your own city. If you are also incorporating, see Private Limited Company registration, and for state-level licences see our state-wise guides.

How long it takes and what it costs
Trademark registration has government-controlled stages, so we focus on filing correctly and responding quickly at each step.
Official filing fee. The Trade Marks Rules, 2017 set the e-filing fee for Form TM-A per class: ₹4,500 for an individual, startup or small enterprise, and ₹9,000 for any other applicant, such as a company, LLP or partnership. Fees can be revised, so check the official fee schedule before you file. Our professional fee is separate.
Your total cost has two parts: our professional fee, and any government or statutory fees that apply. Government fees are set by the authority and vary by case, so we give you an itemised quote before you commit to anything. Trademark registration is included in our Armour package. See our pricing page for packages. Registering a company as well? Our cost calculator estimates the incorporation charges.
