What is GST registration?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration gives your business a 15-character GSTIN. With it you can charge GST on invoices, claim input tax credit on your purchases, and work with clients who require a GST-registered supplier.

Registration is mandatory in some situations and optional in others. Thresholds and rules can change, so we check the current position for your business instead of applying a rule of thumb.

The first two characters of a GSTIN are the state code (33 for Tamil Nadu), followed by the PAN of the business. Registration is state-wise: if you supply goods or services from more than one state, you generally need a registration in each of those states. There is no government fee for applying on the GST portal; our fee covers preparation, filing and follow-up.

Not sure whether you need it yet? Read our guide to GST for MSMEs, or compare the monthly return obligations that follow registration.

Is this right for you?

Who this is for

A good fit if you

  • Cross the GST turnover threshold for goods or services
  • Sell across state lines or through online marketplaces, where the rules may require registration
  • Want to claim input tax credit on business purchases
  • Have business clients who ask for a GSTIN

Something else may suit you better if

Your turnover is below the threshold and you have no mandatory trigger. Registration may be optional for now.

You make only tax-exempt supplies. Registration may not apply.

Your turnover is small and you sell goods locally. The composition scheme may be an option once registered.

Requirements

What you need

We confirm the exact list for your situation during your free consultation.

When it is mandatory
Generally once annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (limits differ in some states and for some categories). Some suppliers, such as certain inter-state suppliers and certain e-commerce sellers, may need to register regardless of turnover, subject to exemptions. Rules change, so we confirm the current position.
PAN and Aadhaar
PAN of the business or proprietor, and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors.
Business proof
Certificate of incorporation, partnership deed or similar, depending on your structure.
Address proof
Ownership document or rent agreement with NOC and a recent utility bill for the business address.
Bank details
Cancelled cheque or bank statement of your business account.
Authorised signatory
Photograph, and digital signature or EVC for filing.
The process

How GST registration works on the GST portal

This is the government process we prepare and file for you. The steps are the same for a proprietor, partnership, LLP or company, but the documents and signatory differ.

  1. Part A. Enter the PAN, mobile number and email of the business on the GST portal and verify them with OTPs. The portal issues a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
  2. Part B. Using the TRN, fill in business details, promoters or partners, places of business, bank account and goods or services, and upload the supporting documents.
  3. Verify. Sign the application with a digital signature (DSC) or an e-verification code (EVC), depending on your type of business. Aadhaar authentication is part of this step for the persons named in the application.
  4. ARN. After submission you receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). You can track the application on the portal with it.
  5. Officer review. A tax officer reviews the application. If more information is needed, a notice is issued and you must reply within the time it allows.
  6. Certificate. On approval, the registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) with your GSTIN is issued. You then display it at your place of business and start issuing GST invoices.

Some applicants are approved faster. Since 1 November 2025 the CGST Rules provide for registration within 3 working days for applicants who clear the portal’s risk screening (Rule 9A), and for an Aadhaar-authenticated simplified option for small taxpayers with monthly output tax liability on B2B supplies of up to ₹2.5 lakh (Rule 14A). Whether either route applies depends on the portal’s assessment of your application, so we confirm it before filing.

Chennai & Tamil Nadu

GST registration for businesses in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

GST registration is applied for online on the national GST portal, so you do not need to visit an office to start. A registration for your Tamil Nadu place of business carries the state code 33 at the start of the GSTIN.

In Tamil Nadu, the portal can ask an applicant to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication and document verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra before the ARN is generated. The email you receive from the portal tells you whether this applies to your application. If it does, we prepare the originals you need to carry and guide you through booking the appointment.

GST is only one of the registrations a new Tamil Nadu business may need. Shops and Establishments registration, a local trade licence and professional tax are decided at state or local-body level; see our state-wise guides for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. If you are setting up a company at the same time, start with Private Limited Company registration.

Avoid delays

Common reasons a GST application is queried

  • Name or address on the application does not match the PAN, Aadhaar or address proof.
  • Rented premises without a rent agreement and the owner’s consent (NOC), or a utility bill that is not recent.
  • Business activity or goods and services described too vaguely, or not matching the constitution of the business.
  • Bank account details missing or not in the name of the business or proprietor.
  • Authorised signatory details, photograph or DSC not matching what the portal requires.

We check these points before we file, so the first submission is as complete as possible.

Timeline & cost

How long it takes and what it costs

3–7working days, typically, when documents are in order. A physical verification or officer query can add time.

Actual timing depends on how quickly documents are ready and on the processing time of the authority involved.

Your total cost has two parts: our professional fee, and any government or statutory fees that apply. Government fees are set by the authority and vary by case, so we give you an itemised quote before you commit to anything. GST registration is included in our Starter package. See our pricing page for packages, or our Partner Plans if you also want monthly returns and accounting handled.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the questions we hear most.

It depends on your turnover, what you sell and where you sell. Many small businesses below the threshold do not need it. Some situations, such as certain inter-state supplies and sales through e-commerce operators, can require registration regardless of turnover, and exemptions and conditions apply. Some businesses also register voluntarily. We check the current rules for your case.
Yes. You can register even if you are below the threshold, for example to claim input tax credit or to work with business clients who need a GSTIN.
It commonly takes 3 to 7 working days if documents are in order. Applicants who clear the portal’s risk screening may be approved within 3 working days under Rule 9A of the CGST Rules, but a verification, a Suvidha Kendra visit or a query from the GST officer can take longer.
If your annual turnover from services is above the threshold, or other rules apply, yes. Otherwise it may be optional. We assess your situation before recommending anything.
PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, proof of business constitution (such as a certificate of incorporation or partnership deed), proof of the business address, bank account details, a photograph and a signatory authorisation. See the “What you need” section above for the full list.
No. Applying for registration on the GST portal carries no government fee. Our professional fee covers preparation, filing and follow-up, and we give an itemised quote before you commit.
Yes, a home can be shown as the place of business if you can provide address proof: an ownership document, or a rent agreement with the owner’s consent, plus a recent utility bill. Other rules, such as the nature of the activity, still apply, and we check them before filing.
Generally yes. GST registration is state-wise, so if you supply goods or services from places of business in more than one state, each state needs its own registration under the same PAN. Chennai and Tamil Nadu businesses that also operate from Puducherry or elsewhere should plan for this. We confirm the position for your set-up.
Not always. The GST portal tells you by email whether your application needs biometric Aadhaar authentication and document verification at a Suvidha Kendra or can continue online. We guide you through whichever applies.
